What to do following a sharps injury

1.

Encourage bleeding by squeezing site of puncture wound. Do not suck.

2.

Wash the wound with soap and water. Do not scrub.

3.

Wash out splashes in eyes using tap water or an eye wash bottle, and nose or mouth with plenty of tap water. Do not swallow the water.

4.

Cover wound with waterproof dressing.

5.

Report the incident to a supervisor, line manager or health and safety adviser and to your Occupational Health Service.

6.

If the injury is contaminated and occurs out of office
hours report to A&E.

Phone us the next working day for further advice.
